BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Gather a few things.
This sheet, crayons, timer on a phone.
One useful question
Which sound was closest? Which was farthest away?
Children practice sound recognition and careful listening.
Notice sounds close by and farther away.
Listening gives children a different way to notice a familiar room.
What children will do
Listen for everyday sounds, then draw or describe what you hear.
How to guide the activity
Sit quietly together and listen for a few everyday sounds. Draw or name what you hear, then point toward its source. Ask which sound seemed closest and which was farthest away; there is no need to seek out a noisy appliance.
Make it gentler
Name 3 sounds only. Point to where they come from.
Add a little stretch
Classify sounds: human, machine, nature, water. Which group won?
A good place to stop
Choose the favorite sound and make it again together.
