BEFORE YOU BEGIN
A few simple materials.
No chess experience needed. A grown-up can read aloud and help with cutting. Use a chess set or the included board and pieces.
Bring a pencil and crayons. Pointing, speaking and drawing all count as participation.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
One discovery at a time.
Recognize how pieces move, make legal moves that keep the king safe, and distinguish checkmate from stalemate.
Why it matters: each small activity makes a rule visible, then gives the learner a chance to try it and explain what happened.
Start here.
Read the grown-up guidance on page 2. Begin with the board on page 3, then choose Rook roads on page 4. Color the rook, trace its movement, and try the choices together.
One page and a short conversation are enough for a first session. The whole collection is a pathway, not a single sitting.

Teaching cues and worked answers are included. Ask “How do you know?” and try a new example. Coloring or finishing a sheet is not a test score.
Use adult cutting help. If loose tokens are unsuitable, point or draw instead.
