BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Gather a few things.

This sheet and a pencil. No loose playing pieces are needed.

One useful question

“Can you reach that square without turning during the move?”

HOW IT GOES

  1. Find R on a1. A rook moves along a row or column, never diagonally.
  2. Trace one straight move from a1 to a4. Stop at the star.
  3. Now reach d4 in two straight moves from a1. Draw a dot where you turn.

Make it gentler

Trace one straight road together.

Add a little stretch

Find both two-move routes from a1 to d4.

A good place to stop

Explain a rook move to your grown-up.
